Description

The Registered Nurse supports the development and delivery of the Mental Health and Addictions programming to individuals struggling with substance use disorders through the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. This includes contributing to program design, developing policies and procedures, establishing referral pathways, creating individualized care plans, and ensuring best practice approaches to assessment, treatment, navigation, and support for individuals and families experiencing substance use and/or concurrent disorders.

 

The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive patient and family teaching, administers medications, obtains medical histories, and provides guidance as a subject matter expert for other professionals within the program to ensure high-quality, standardized care.

This position acts as a key connection point for patients, offering rapid response to substance use concerns, safety needs, and harm reduction. The nurse facilitates seamless transitions between service providers and supports timely access to the full spectrum of healthcare services. Aligned with the five pillars that include supportive environments, peer support, harm reduction, substance use healthcare, and care transitions and navigation, the goal of this role is to improve access, enhance care quality, and support compassionate, evidence-informed services for individuals affected by substance use within the community.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing (university or community college)
  • Current Registration with Ontario College of Nurses
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) is required
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Nurses’ Association specialty program in Psychiatric/Mental Health
  • Nursing CPMHN(C) is preferred
  • Current certification in buprenorphine training or willing to complete the training
  • Current certification or training in Harm Reduction or Addictions is preferred
  • Specialized training or certification in concurrent disorders preferred
  • Previous experience in acute care nursing, mental health preferred
  • Experience in program development and providing education is preferred
  • Firm understanding of concurrent disorders and associated treatment modalities
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to solve problems independently
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture preferred
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to meet the physical and sensory demands of the job
  • Reliable attendance record
